Nicole walked over to the front desk with Mike right on her side. He was slipping down but he grabbed his side and held him upright. " Come on, you have to cooperate with me now." Nicole grabbed the corner of the front desk. " Hey, where is Dr. Jennings? I need his help again. His former patient, Mike, is here and he needs help, now!" Nicole raised her voice. The lady walked off. Nicole went over and sat down on a chair with Mike, on her knees, looking up at him. " Why is this happening?" Nicole dug her face into his leg, wishing this would all just go away. She could wake up and this would all be a dream. Damn, Jordan. Mike would be fine if it wasn't for him. " We'll just have to wait for the doctor, baby, okay?" Nicole looked at him, scared. Knowing this was probably the end. She grabbed onto his other hand.

Dr. Jennings came slowly around the corner, looking at Mike and Nicole. "What happened to Mike, Nicole?" he asked, taking the opposite of Mike's limp hands and peeling the blood-soaked bandage off. "Cutter." he muttered, lifting Mike from under the arms and setting him on a stretcher. He then barked some orders to a nearby nurse and she wheeled him away. "Come into my office." he said, motioning to a small office.

Dr Jennings frowned, twiddling his thumbs and not looking up. "Has he been through any...ah, extreme stress lately? Any signs at all? Changes of behavior, mood swings, stomach-aches, anything?" he asked, sighing.

Nicole looked out the window. She wanted to avoid talking about it, but she didn't want to seem rude. She opened her mouth, but nothing came out. She looked at the clock on the wall. I think he has enough time, she thought. She straightened herself up on the chair and began to talk. " A former friend of mine, Jordan, came over to visit while Mike was out. Jordan just talked to me about our past. Nothing big, but when Mike came home and saw Jordan....touching me, Mike went on a rage. They were fighting, and choking each other, then Mike....Mike...took out his knife, the poisoned knife....cut Jordan, and stab...heart. Jordan is gone, dead. Mike...poor Mike, he is suffering from the killing. He really didn't mean to kill him, he was just trying to save me from Jordan." Nicole kept her head down, sniffling. She gasped for air and began to cry again. " I don't want him to leave me, not right now....too much pain already in my life, I can't afford to lose him also."

The doctor tapped his fingers on the table. Raising his gaze to focus on Nicole, he released a deep sigh. "Nicole, losing him to death isn't the problem here. The only problem I see is losing him to himself." Looking back down, he said, "Do you know he slit his wrists, both of them? That's what the bandages were for. It seems he tried to wash some of the poison off of the knife, but he didn't clean it off entirely. What you see is the reaction to mild blood poisoning, which can be taken care of. Mike isn't himself, now. He's nearly lost in memories. You can go to see him, but I warn you, he might not even know you were there..."

Nicole looked at him. Puzzled. " Would he remember...me?" Nicole asked, folding her arms. All this stuff that was happening, and stuff he is doing to himself, she couldn't take it. She looked at the clock again, then looked back up the doctor.

Dr. Jennings looked down at his hands. "I-I;m...not sure, Nicole. I Just don;t know. This is a case that can only be studied by a psychiatrist...when Mike is well you sould take him to one." he smiled sympathertically and sadly. "I ubderstand. It'll be tough to go in there and see him like this, but you have t be brave...: smiling, he thoughtfully added in a low voice, "Lest thou lose him to himself" Placing a hand on Nicole's shoulder, he turned her toward the doorway. "He's in 301, Nicole. Good luck."

The doctor then turned to the door and led her out, talking to the earth. The only snatches of conversation Nicole was allowed to hear were the result of the doctor's on carelessness. "I'm worried about them." he said. "This could ruin their relationship, especially is Mike doesn't pull through...It'll be so hard for her..."

Nicole shook her head. " I can't do this, doctor. I don't think I can go on like this. This is his second time in the hospital! This time, it's all my fault. Wait, the last time was all my fault! You see, Mike doesn't need me anymore. I am ruining his life. He is dying.....because of me. Me!" Nicole fell to her knees and hid her face in her hands. " I'll be fine, without anyone. I can't afford another episode of him in the hospital again..."

Dr. Jennings took her wrist and lifted her up. "Nicole," he said, turning her toward the door to Mike's room. "Go. It would be best if you saw him...and it'd really kill him if you left him now...he'd lose the will to live. He'd just give up. You changed his life for the better, Nicole. I advise you to talk to him."

Sighing, the doctor turned back to the nurse and resumed talking. "This kid is in one of the worst mental -and physical- conditions I've ever seen. Hopefully hat girl can help him pull through. She is who he's living for..."

Nicole scoffed. " What good will it do? He probably won't even recognize me anymore." Nicole said to herself, walking into the room. She shut the door behind her and sighed. She glanced at Mike then looked away. She put her hand on the doorknob, about to leave. Then she thought about Mike. What am I doing to him, I can't do this, though...But I must. Nicole walked over to Mike and kneeled down beside his side. " Mike, can you hear me?"

Mike was in his bed, and into his right arm, fluids dripped from an IV. His slit wrists were bandaged up and he crossed them in front of him as Nicole came in. Watching her stonily as she returned to the door, then after a brief pause, she came over to his bedside. His contacts were out, as was the usual, and his grey eyes looked like stone.

"Yes. I can hear you. Of course I can hear you, Nicole. I love you, did you know that?" his steely eyes were tearful as he looked at her, a faint smile on his face.

Nicole stared hard at his soft steel eyes, so unique to her. She tucked her lips in for a second, then smiled to him. " Yes, I did. And did you know that I love you, also?"
